Carmine Street Comics (CSC) always appealed to me as a comics shop because of their Storefront Artists Program. As described by CSC:
“At CSC, you become a part of the process by interacting with comics-creators (writers AND illustrators) one-on-one as soon as you walk in the door.”
It’s a simple idea that I’ve never seen anywhere else. On a whim, I decided to drop in to buy a few comics and speak with Jon Gorga, the owner. We talked about the Storefront Artists Program and other events coming up at CSC:
Mar 27 – 28 (Fri – Sat)
24 Hour Comic Day
(I hear some comics frenetic comics making will ensue)
May 2 (Sat)
Free Comic Book Day
(I heard creators will be set up throughout the store)
I left the store feeling kind of like I do after a convention — just happy to have existed in a vacuum to focus on comics. Jon is a giving fellow and we would all do well to match his spirit!
(Jon was also super kind enough to carry my indie comic books on consignment, which include RDSL Chronicles #1, The Robots of Dharma #0, Red Bloods #1, Smell a Rat #1, and The Horror of Loon Lake Anthology.)
Carmine Street Comics is at 34 Carmine Street in West Village.
